Two Abbey Wood Lodge residents enjoyed a dream day out on the water after their wish for a relaxing canal cruise with family and friends was brought to life by a dedicated team of volunteers.
Eileen and Sylvia spent the day aboard The Rose of Parbold, a fully accessible community barge operated entirely by volunteers, as part of a special wish arranged especially for them.
Despite an uncertain weather forecast, the day exceeded expectations. After early concerns about rain, the sun broke through, providing ideal conditions for passengers to enjoy the peaceful surroundings from the boat’s front deck. Apart from a few brief showers, the weather remained warm and pleasant throughout the journey.
The vessel, equipped with accessible facilities including a wheelchair-friendly toilet and a fully fitted kitchen, ensured everyone could travel comfortably while taking in the tranquil scenery along the canal.
The cruise travelled towards Burscough, with passengers enjoying views of local wildlife, exchanging waves with walkers and fellow boaters, and stopping midway for lunch before continuing their leisurely journey.
As the boat returned to its mooring, it was clear the day had made a lasting impression. Guests described the experience as both relaxing and uplifting, with many saying they wished the trip could have lasted even longer.
Lifestyle Coordinators at Abbey Wood Lodge said they were delighted to have been able to make the day possible and thanked the skipper, crew and volunteers of The Rose of Parbold for helping create such a memorable occasion.
For Eileen and Sylvia, it was a day filled with friendship, laughter and cherished memories—one that everyone on board is unlikely to forget.
