Residents and team at Abbey Wood Lodge Care Home came together for a heartfelt and memorable VE Day celebration, honouring the spirit and resilience of those who lived through World War II.
The day began with a sense of reflection and unity as we tuned into the BBC’s official VE Day broadcast, followed by a respectful two-minute silence to remember the sacrifices made and to pay tribute to the heroes of the past.
In the afternoon, the home was filled with music, laughter, and the aroma of delicious treats as we hosted a delightful VE Day tea party. Tables were adorned with Union Jack flags and vintage décor, and residents enjoyed a variety of sweet and savoury delights, along with a glass of something bubbly to toast the occasion.
We were thrilled to welcome special guest Danielle Thomas, whose beautiful live performance of wartime classics brought joy, nostalgia, and even a few tears to the eyes of many. Her voice transported us back in time and had everyone singing along and waving their flags with pride. To top it all off, even “The King” made an appearance, bringing plenty of smiles and a bit of royal charm to the day!
Adding a deeply personal touch to the celebration, we displayed a collection of residents’ own memories of VE Day in 1945. These moving accounts offer powerful insights into what that historic day meant to those who experienced it first-hand. Visitors and staff are encouraged to stop by and read these stories throughout the week — a tribute to living history within our own home.
It was a truly special day, filled with remembrance, gratitude, and celebration. At Abbey Wood Lodge, we’re proud to honour the past while creating meaningful moments in the present.
Lest we forget. ❤️
