Trent Bridge Residents Relive the Magic of Nottingham’s Historic Goose Fair

Wrapped in coats and brimming with excitement, residents from Trent Bridge Care Home recently spent a joyful afternoon at one of Nottingham’s most beloved and time-honoured traditions – the Goose Fair.

Dating back more than 700 years, the Goose Fair is one of Europe’s oldest and largest travelling fairs. What began as a bustling livestock market in Nottingham’s Old Market Square—named after the thousands of geese once herded into the city for sale—has evolved into a dazzling celebration of lights, laughter, and community spirit. Today, it draws visitors from across the country to the Forest Recreation Ground for an unforgettable experience.

Our residents were delighted to immerse themselves in the fun, trying their luck at fairground favourites like Hook-a-Duck, Roll-a-Ball, and 3-or-Over – proudly taking home prizes as mementos of the day. The air was alive with music and the aroma of classic fairground treats, from piping hot mushy peas to sugar-coated doughnuts enjoyed by all.

For many, the day evoked warm memories of fairs past. Team member Steph, who last visited more than 30 years ago, reflected on how much the fair has evolved. “It’s so much bigger and brighter now – but it still brings that same excitement,” she said. Resident Doreen shared a touching moment, recalling her visits years ago with her late son. “He would have loved to see us here again,” she said with a smile.

While the Goose Fair’s attractions have grown from wooden carousels to towering thrill rides and high-tech games, its heart and spirit remain unchanged. The fair continues to bridge generations, blending nostalgia with new memories for all who attend.

At Trent Bridge, we’re dedicated to creating enriching experiences that keep residents connected – to their memories, their community, and one another. This special trip to the Goose Fair was not just a day out, but a celebration of tradition, togetherness, and the simple joys that bring people closer.
