How 84-Year-Old Former Dancer Sylvia Inspires Her Fellow Residents at Gateford Lodge

A wonderful example of this is 84-year-old resident and former professional dancer Sylvia Hawley, who is tapping into her decades of experience to lead joyful, energetic Chair-O-Size classes for her fellow residents.

Born in Thurcroft, South Yorkshire, Sylvia’s love for movement began in childhood with traditional maypole dancing. In her younger years, she pursued dance professionally, performing as a Betty Fox Babe and sharing the stage with iconic British entertainers including Charlie Chester and Ken Dodd.

From “Dance Worksop” to Chair-O-Size Leader

After stepping back from dancing to focus on raising her family, Sylvia returned to her true passion in her 40s through keep-fit, jazz, and tap. Her dedication led her to earn a formal ballet teaching qualification in her 50s and co-found Dance Worksop, a beloved local dance school where she taught jazz, tap, and ballet to over 100 students at its peak.

Today, Sylvia lives with dementia at Gateford Lodge, but her passion for movement remains as vibrant as ever. When our care team took the time to learn about her incredible background, Sylvia approached us with the inspiring idea of leading a chair-based exercise class combining gentle movement, upbeat music, and fitness.

“I took some time off dancing to look after my family, but my passion never faded,” explains Sylvia. “I am really enjoying teaching again—it’s been too long!”

The weekly sessions have quickly become a highlight in our activity calendar, filling the lounge with music, laughter, and uplifting energy as residents cheer each other on. Regular attendee Guy Mathews, who is 84, shares that Sylvia brings so much energy and happiness to every session that he always leaves with a smile on his face and can’t wait for the next one.

The Power of Reminiscence Therapy and Meaningful Purpose

For individuals living with dementia, engaging in familiar, lifelong skills serves as a deeply therapeutic tool. Leading these movement sessions provides Sylvia with reminiscence therapy, tapping into long-term muscle memory and allowing her to reconnect with her identity as a passionate teacher and performer. Taking on an active leadership role within the home boosts confidence, physical health, and emotional well-being.

Tactile movement and musical prompts can bypass short-term memory barriers, unlocking vivid, comforting long-term memories from early adulthood and childhood.

Sylvia’s son, Stephen Hawley, reflects on how meaningful the experience has been for the family:

“Whilst the Alzheimer’s has robbed mum of most of her memory, she has a vivid recollection of her dancing era and loves to share her stories. This initiative has been an amazingly positive and enjoyable experience for mum and all the residents.”

Home Manager Luke Curley echoes this sentiment:

“We all love hearing Sylvia’s stories about her dancing days. When she approached us about leading a class of her own, we were only too pleased to support her. Whilst the residents get a lot out of her classes, Sylvia herself is using them as a form of reminiscence therapy, which we know is particularly beneficial for people living with dementia.”
