Special Valentine’s Celebration for Couple at Bingley Park Care Home

True love stood the test of time for residents Annie, 97, and Donald Marshall, 95, as staff at Bingley Park Care Home created a heart-warming Valentine’s surprise — a recreation of the very meal they shared on their first date in 1962.

The couple first fell in love while working together at Smiths Mill and later tied the knot in November 1963, building a life in their hometown of Bradford and welcoming their son, Francis. Before meeting Donald, Annie worked at Seabrook Crisps, while Donald was employed at Black Dyke Mills — memories that form part of their rich shared history.

To mark Valentine’s Day and reignite those treasured memories, the care home team arranged a special dinner replicating the romantic meal they once enjoyed at a hotel in Halifax, where a chef famously cooked steak at their table. This time, Chef Claire prepared a delicious menu of vegetable soup, sizzling fillet steak, new potatoes and green beans, followed by a sweet fruit trifle and a glass of bubbly — a nod to their first romantic dinner all those years ago.

Home manager Martin Deakin praised the couple’s enduring bond:

“When it comes to long-lasting love, Annie and Donald are a true representation. We wanted to do something extra special for them, and recreating their first dinner date felt like the perfect way to celebrate their milestone Valentine’s Day.”

Annie was delighted with the thoughtful gesture:

“It was such a lovely surprise to have a personalised meal with Donald, and the steak was delicious.”

When asked about the secret to their lasting relationship, the couple shared simple yet powerful words of wisdom:
