Residents Relive Cherished Memories with Return to Boston’s Iconic Gliderdrome

Two residents from Avocet House Care Home enjoyed an unforgettable trip down memory lane after a heartfelt wish to revisit Boston’s legendary Gliderdrome became a reality.

The visit was inspired by one resident’s desire to return to the iconic venue, which has been at the heart of Boston’s entertainment scene for generations. Famous for its music, dancing and vibrant atmosphere, the Gliderdrome has played host to some of the biggest names in British and international music, creating treasured memories for countless people over the decades.

Determined to make the wish come true, Care Manager Emma and Front of House team member Leila were delighted to accompany residents Paul, 75, and Margaret, 83, to an ABBA tribute evening. Paul was also joined by his wife, Wendy, making the occasion even more special.

Dressed in their finest outfits, the group embraced the opportunity to relive the magic of the Gliderdrome, enjoying an evening filled with music, dancing and nostalgia.

The Gliderdrome has welcomed an extraordinary list of performers throughout its history, including Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Elton John, The Who, Status Quo, Slade, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Ike & Tina Turner, The Platters and many more. For generations of local people, however, it has always been much more than a concert venue—it is a place where lifelong memories were made.

For Margaret, the dance floor quickly became the highlight of the evening.

Emma said: “I couldn’t believe Margaret. She never stopped dancing! From the moment we arrived until it was time to leave, she was on the dance floor showing off her incredible jive moves and infectious enthusiasm. It was such a privilege to see how much joy the evening brought her.”

Paul also spoke of his appreciation for the experience, saying: “It was a wonderful evening spent with fabulous people. I am so lucky to have found Avocet House – they really do look after me well.”

Paul’s wife, Wendy, added: “I can’t thank you enough for coming and supporting me and Paul tonight. It means the world to us.”

The outing was about far more than revisiting a familiar place. It gave residents the opportunity to reconnect with treasured memories, favourite music and experiences that have shaped their lives. The smiles, laughter and dancing throughout the evening highlighted the positive impact that meaningful, person-centred experiences can have on wellbeing.
