On the 23rd of July, Abbey Wood Lodge hosted an engaging talk by local journalist Roger Blaxall, who shared the poignant stories of five children evacuated to Ormskirk during World War II, including his own mother-in-law. Roger brought along her suitcase, a childhood photograph, and her identity card, adding a personal touch to the history. He recounted their experiences as evacuees and a memorable reunion in 2005 at The Civic in Ormskirk, where many reconnected with their wartime host families and revisited their temporary homes.
The residents were captivated by Roger’s presentation, which included newspaper clippings and photographs from the reunions. The tales of resilience and adaptation during such a tumultuous time resonated deeply. When Roger invited the residents to share their own evacuation stories, Bryan recounted his challenging time in Wales, where he faced a language barrier and struggled to catch up academically after returning home to bombed-out schools. Doreen, unable to attend the talk, often fondly reminisces about being evacuated from Liverpool to Ormskirk and the kindness of her host, Mrs. Riding.
Residents who weren’t evacuated shared their wartime memories, such as witnessing bombings in Liverpool. Granny Pat vividly recalled walking along the railway with friends and family, collecting shrapnel pieces as a game, with the hottest piece declaring the ‘winner.’
