At Tanglewood we understand as a carer there may be times when you are looking for a short break. We recognise that looking after your loved one on a 24 hour basis can become exhausting and tiring. Our Guide to Respite Care

Tanglewood’s Approach To Respite Care

It may be that your loved one needs a change in environment, to meet new friends, and have the stimulation of new activities. We can also support you with this decision. Respite can provide a valuable break, and may also provide some reassurance to an individual that is finding making the decision to make the move permanently into a care home. This gives them an opportunity to experience one of our homes before making a commitment.

Our respite care homes use technology to improve resident experiences, including respite care homes like Trent Bridge Care Home in West Bridgford and Bingley Park Care Home in Bingley use the LifeLibrary app. Using this technologyfamilies are able to create a digital memory book that guides our personalised activity plans for residents. It’s this type of commitment to connection that results in your loved one’s preferences being at the heart of their time with us at Tanglewood care homes. The festive season can be demanding for carers. Our Christmas respite stays provide a guaranteed break while your loved one enjoys a safe, cheerful environment. They can join activities such as Christmas baking, handmade decorations like those at Beeston Rise, and seasonal outings that offer companionship, creativity, and connection. We can provide respite care for Residential, Dementia and Nursing. Our friendly care home environment is more than a place to stay. During a trial respite stay, your loved one can get to know the care home and enjoy many of our luxury care home amenities.

Respite Care FAQs

How much money are you allowed to keep before paying for care?

In England, if your capital and savings are over £23,250, you will generally be expected to pay the full cost of your care. If your assets fall below this threshold, you may be eligible for financial assistance from your local authority. You can learn more about care costs in our article.

How much does 1 week of respite care cost?

Because our care is tailored to the individual, costs vary depending on the level of support needed and the specific Tanglewood home you choose. Fees for respite stays are typically payable in advance. Our Home Managers are always happy to provide a transparent breakdown of costs during a tour. Get in touch today for full transparency on weekly fees, which cover everything from 24-hour care to regular activities and outings.Fees are calculated based on a bespoke package tailored to your specific care needs and the type of room you choose.

Is respite care covered by the NHS?

In some cases, yes. If a person has complex or high-intensity healthcare needs, they may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC), which is a package of care fully funded by the NHS. We recommend speaking with a social worker or GP to explore these funding options.

How long do I have to wait for respite care?

We strive to be as flexible as possible to suit your family’s schedule. While we recommend booking a few weeks in advance for planned holidays, we understand that life is unpredictable. If you have an urgent need, please contact your local Tanglewood respite care home and we will do our very best to assist you quickly.

How do you qualify for respite?

Qualifying for respite care involves an assessment of your physical and emotional needs. At Tanglewood, we perform an in-depth assessment upon admission to ensure we understand your medical history and lifestyle choices, creating a bespoke Personal Care Plan from day one. This ensures we can provide a bespoke care plan that maintains your independence and dignity from the moment you arrive.

What are the signs someone needs respite care?

It may be time to consider respite care if a caregiver is experiencing the emotional weight, feeling physically exhausted, irritable, or overwhelmed. For the individual receiving care, signs might include an increased need for safety monitoring, a desire for more social interaction, or a temporary change in health that requires professional nursing support. For the care recipient, signs may include a need for more medical oversight, increased safety concerns like falls, or a desire for the social engagement found in our communal lounges and cafes.

What is the difference between respite and a care home?

Respite care is designed for “short-term” stays. At Tanglewood, many people choose a respite stay as a “trial stay” to experience our vibrant communities and luxury amenities before deciding on permanent residency. Whether staying for a week or several months, respite residents receive the same high-quality, person-centred care as our permanent residents.

Who is entitled to respite care?

Respite care is available for individuals who are usually supported by a family member or professional carer at home, as well as those needing a safe environment for convalescence after a hospital stay. To determine entitlement for local authority funding, a Carer’s Assessment and a Needs Assessment from your local council in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, or Yorkshire is typically required.

What Is Respite Care and Who Is It For?

Respite care is a short stay in a care home. It gives family carers planned time to rest, or offers temporary support after a hospital stay or illness.

It is suitable for older adults who need short-term help with personal care, nursing support, or specialist dementia care. Respite care is available at all Tanglewood homes, including Abbey Wood Lodge, Avocet House, Cedar Falls, Cloverleaf, Holbeach Meadows, Hunters Creek, Meadows Park, Richard House, Sandpiper, Tanglewood Horncastle, Toray Pines, and Trafford Waters.

How Long Does a Respite Stay Last?

Respite stays are flexible. Most last from a few days to several weeks, depending on your family’s needs.

What activities can respite care home residents join?

At Tanglewood’s respite care homes, our activity programmes are designed to be engaging, sociable, and fun. Respite residents are welcome to join everything happening in the home.

Testimonials

"I’ve been here a long time. I left once to be nearer to my family but nothing was like Cedar Falls so I rang the Home Manager and asked to come back. I’m pretty independent and enjoy being in the bungalow. I do keep to myself a lot but can join in whenever I feel like it."
