February has been a month filled with warmth, reflection and heartfelt moments at Avocet House Care Home, where residents and staff embraced the theme of LOVE in all its many shapes and sizes.
Love means something different to each of us, and that was exactly where the celebrations began. Residents were invited to share what love meant to them, prompting truly beautiful and deeply personal responses. For some, love was the enduring bond of marriage and memories of husbands and wives. For others, it was the joy of children, grandchildren and lifelong friendships. Many spoke fondly of beloved pets, treasured holidays, favourite places, and even the simple pleasure of a cherished meal or a comforting cup of tea.
These conversations soon led to a touching stroll down memory lane, with laughter, storytelling and more than a few happy tears. It was a reminder that love is woven through every chapter of life — in big milestones and in the smallest everyday moments.
With so many residents speaking about their love of animals, it was only fitting that February — our Month of Love — began with a very special visit. Michelle returned to Avocet House accompanied by her wonderful collection of animals, much to everyone’s delight. Residents were thrilled to meet and interact with rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, a proud rooster and even a tortoise.
The joy on everyone’s faces said it all. Animals have a remarkable way of bringing comfort, companionship and connection, and their visit filled the home with smiles and laughter. One of our residents, Ann, was so taken with a particularly cuddly guinea pig that she was very reluctant to hand it back at the end of the session — a moment that perfectly captured the happiness the animals brought.
Valentine’s Day itself was marked with not one but two special events. The celebrations began with an intimate afternoon tea, where residents were joined by loved ones to share sweet treats, warm conversation and precious time together. The room was filled with affection and togetherness — a true celebration of the bonds that mean so much.
Later, the romantic spirit continued with a fabulous performance from the marvellous Nicky and Neil of Clear Productions. Their heartfelt selection of songs from the West End had everyone tapping their feet and singing along, setting the perfect mood for a day dedicated to love. The performance brought back fond memories of theatre trips and favourite shows, once again proving how music has the power to transport us.
As the Month of Love drew to a close, Avocet House residents and staff took the celebrations out into the wider community. In a small but meaningful act of kindness, homemade brownies and shortbread were delivered to local supporters who generously donate prizes for the home’s fairs and fundraising events throughout the year.
It was a simple gesture, but one filled with gratitude — our way of saying thank you to those who continually show their support.
At Avocet House, February has been a reminder that love is not confined to one day or one definition. It lives in memories, in music, in the comfort of a furry friend, in shared laughter and in the kindness we show to one another. And as this special month has shown, when love is celebrated together, it truly fills a home.
