A shopping trip to remember for resident Judith
When we ask residents at our care home in Huddersfield what they would like to do, we’re told that some want a favourite meal, whereas others look for a day out. For 86-year-old Judith, who lives with us at Lindley Park, the answer was that she wanted to go shopping and treat herself.
Bailey Greetham from Be Great Fitness, who works with us to help residents stay active, captured Judith’s wish on video. When the clip was shared online, it reached over a million views, eventually catching the attention of The White Rose shopping centre in Huddersfield. They stepped in to turn that wish into reality, gifting Judith £500 to spend on whatever she chose.
Retail therapy and familiar memories
Judith worked in retail earlier in her life, so this was more than a trip to the shops. It was a chance to revisit a familiar environment. Accompanied by Bailey and our home manager, Anna Chan, Judith browsed the stores with energy. She picked out a new handbag, shoes, perfume and a dress.
After a busy morning, the group headed to Bianco Lounge for lunch. Judith reflected on the experience later, saying that she felt like she was dreaming and that it was lovely to have a proper shopping trip where she could spend money on herself.
The make a wish initiative at Lindley Park
This day was part of the Make a Wish initiative we run at Lindley Park. We believe that life should be filled with purpose and the pursuit of personal ambitions, regardless of age. Listening to what matters to our residents allows us to help them create memories that feel truly personal.
It was a privilege to see Judith enjoy her day. We are grateful to the team at The White Rose and to Bailey for their generosity in making this happen.
