Susan Bullock, a team member at Humberston House Care Home in Grimsby, has won the Care Home Worker Award at the Yorkshire and Humber Care Awards.
The judges recognised Susan, 61, for her creative approach to communication and her commitment to improving life for people living with dementia and other complex care needs.
The awards panel praised Susan for her:
“Outstanding dedication to training, innovation and resident empowerment through creative and immersive learning such as dementia virtual reality (VR) and Makaton.”
They added:
“Susan’s work shows leadership, creativity and compassion, with a strong focus on independence, dignity and meaningful engagement.”
These values reflect Tanglewood’s person-centred approach. We focus on the individual, not the diagnosis.

Susan has worked in care since she was 18. She is a mother of two and has supported people with learning disabilities, mental health needs, and age-related conditions throughout her career.
She joined Humberston House in October 2023 as part of the home’s founding team. Since then, she has made a positive and lasting impact on residents and colleagues.
Susan introduced Makaton to support residents who find spoken communication difficult. Makaton uses signs and symbols to improve understanding.
One of Susan’s videos showing this approach went viral on TikTok and received more than 40,000 views. Her work has inspired care teams across the sector to communicate in more inclusive ways.
Susan spoke about winning the award.
“I feel honoured to receive this award. The little things matter most. If a resident has been out for the day, I close the curtains and switch on a small lamp so the room feels welcoming when they return.”
She added:
“We think creatively and bring our own ideas to our work. It’s a pleasure to be part of the Humberston House team. I couldn’t imagine a better place to finish my career.”
Claire Stainton, Home Manager at Humberston House, shared her pride.
“Susan shows what true care looks like. She always finds creative ways to support and comfort residents. Her use of Makaton has transformed communication in the home. Her warmth, humour, and dedication make her a valued member of our team.”
