Mary is one of the wonderful residents at Avocet House Care Home, a woman whose life has been shaped by creativity, determination and community spirit.
A lady of many talents, Mary enjoyed a remarkable career in a profession that was heavily male-dominated at the time. Working as an architect, she was the only woman in the business and became affectionately known not as Mary, but as “The Bird”—a nickname that reflected both her individuality and resilience.
Her artistic talents remain very much alive today and are something greatly cherished at Avocet House. Mary can often be seen quietly sketching staff as they go about their daily work—usually without them realising—or capturing the changing scenery outside her window. Her drawings are a reminder that creativity knows no age.
Beyond her professional and artistic life, Mary has always played an active role in her local church and wider community. A keen singer and musician, she was a valued member of the Boston Community Choir, where she sang and played both the organ and piano. Music has long been one of Mary’s great passions, bringing joy not only to her but to everyone around her.
This year at Avocet House, residents were invited to share their New Year Wish—similar to a New Year’s resolution, but with the hope that, with a little support, these wishes could truly be made a reality. Mary knew exactly what she wanted: to play the piano again.
Determined to help make this wish come true, Avocet House’s activity coordinator worked closely with one of Mary’s friends from the Boston Community Choir. With their combined efforts, and help from others, a keyboard was finally sourced for Mary to keep in her room, allowing her to play whenever she wishes. It is hoped that, once she has had time to practise and reacquaint herself with her beloved instrument, Mary will perform for fellow residents and staff.
Mary was overwhelmed when she was presented with the keyboard, saying:
“Oh my word! I don’t know what to say, I am totally lost for words. You have made me so happy. Thank you very much!”
Everyone at Avocet House is delighted to have helped make one resident’s wish come true and to support Mary in rediscovering a hobby she once thought she had lost forever. The team now looks forward to making many more wishes come true for the residents they care for at Avocet House.
