Care home residents at Toray Pines in Coningsby celebrated the year of the horse this chines new year with a vibrant and immersive celebration. The Coningsby care home was adorned with traditional Chinese style decorations and lanterns hand made by residents. We were delighted to be visited by local charity, Rainbow Dreaming CIC, a very special local charity that kindly provided us with miniature horses. This alongside a banquet of a very tasty selection of traditional Chinese food made especially for this amazing day.
Staff in the Lincolnshire care home worked carefully to make the experience as inclusive for residents regardless of their ability, which included a 71-year-old resident, Roger Gadd. Roger has asked for the miniature horse to pau him, a bedside visit so he could be included in the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Roger told us how much it meant to him, “Seeing the horses really made my day. I used to have a Jack Russel rescue dog called Candy who has a litter of puppies. My son has a lovely dachshund called Frank, so animals have always been special to me. It brought a big smile to my face – I didn’t expect anything like that at all.”
Lifestyle co-ordinator Sophie Lamming organised the care home celebrations and craft activities said, “At Toray Pines, we want every activity to be meaningful and accessible. Creating inclusive experiences, especially for residents who cant leave their rooms – is essential. These moments bring a sense of connection and a real value to people’s lives.
The visit from the miniature horses was definitely a highlight of the year so far and created such lovely memories for all our residents.”
A Tanglewood, we understand that life in a care home is more than just about the care needed, but rather about celebrating life in everything our residents do. Being regularly included in cultural events and celebrations like Chinese New Year helps our residents to avoid those feelings of disconnection and confusion, to make sure they are active participants in their own lives. All of our care home activities are designed to support mental stimulation that helps brain health and critical thinking. We believe that engaging in activities from creative arts to cultural celebrations give residents a reason to get up in the morning and gives them a feeling of accomplishment, the same way it does our care home teams. It’s helpful for residents to keep up their connection with the wider community, through our partnerships with local schools, families and cultural traditional. It’s why at our care homes families and friends are always welcome to make our care homes an extension of the family unit rather than a separate entity.
