At Trent Bridge Care Home, we had the honour of celebrating one very special resident—Olwyn, our beloved dinner lady. Olwyn’s remarkable career as a head chef spanned over 40 years, with the majority of her time dedicated to Trent Bridge Primary School, just a stone’s throw from her current home at Trent Bridge Care Home. During her tenure at the school, Olwyn built cherished relationships with the children and the staff. When it came time for her to retire, the school community went all out to give her a heartfelt and well deserved send-off.
In recognition of Olwyn’s incredible career and the lasting impact she made, we dedicated our recent Tanglewood Has Taste “Back to School” event to her. The celebration honoured both her culinary talents and the deep connections she forged throughout her career.
A standout dish from Olwyn’s time at the school became the star of the show at the event. It was a student’s drawing in Olwyn’s retirement book that captured a meal of pie, chips, mushy peas, and carrots—her signature dish. Olwyn loved preparing this meal so much that she made it for her husband, Les, every Wednesday evening. The dish became a symbol of her dedication both at work and at home, making it the perfect choice for our event.
The emotional dedication, shared in front of her family and new friends at Trent Bridge Care Home, was a beautiful tribute to the woman Olwyn has always been. Her legacy as a caring, skilled, and beloved chef was felt deeply as we celebrated her journey, both professionally and personally. Thank you, Mrs. Knowles, for the immense difference you’ve made to so many lives—then, and now.
