Residents and staff at Avocet House Care Home have spent the past month celebrating inspirational women and reflecting on the remarkable impact women have had on society and in their own lives.
Throughout the month, residents took part in discussions and activities centred around influential women in history who have helped shape the world we live in today. Names such as Emmeline Pankhurst, Diana, Princess of Wales, Queen Elizabeth II, and Margaret Thatcher were among those remembered and discussed for their courage, leadership, and lasting contributions to society.
However, the conversations did not stop with famous figures. Residents also shared heartfelt stories about the women closer to home who had inspired them over the years. Many spoke fondly of mothers, grandmothers, sisters, wives, and friends who had been the “glue” holding families together — women who had shown strength, love, and resilience while caring for others, supporting their families, and fighting for the wellbeing of their children.
Staff described the discussions as a joy to listen to, with residents recounting touching and often emotional memories of the women who had shaped their lives and communities.
To mark the celebrations, Avocet House hosted a special Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea. Rather than limiting the event to mothers alone, the home chose to celebrate all women, recognising that many women without children have still played an essential role in nurturing, guiding, and supporting the lives of children, friends, and family members.
Residents enjoyed a beautifully prepared afternoon tea created by the home’s head chef, Emily, who served an elegant selection of treats accompanied by Prosecco. Guests were also given small keepsakes to take home, providing a lasting reminder of the special occasion.
Reflecting on the celebrations, staff shared a quote by William Golding, the renowned British author, which perfectly captured the spirit of the month:
“I think women are foolish to pretend they are equal to men. They are far superior and always have been. Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she will give you a baby. If you give her a house, she will give you a home. If you give her groceries, she will give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she will give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges whatever is given to her.”
Residents and staff agreed wholeheartedly with the sentiment, reflecting that the month had been a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strength, compassion, and influence of women — both famous and those whose quiet contributions often go unrecognised but are no less powerful.
