Activities at Abbey Wood Lodge Care Home

Everyone has their own idea of what makes a good day. For some residents, it’s an afternoon filled with music and conversation. For others, it’s time spent in the garden, sharing memories over a cup of tea or enjoying the company of family and friends.

It’s those everyday moments that often mean the most. We often find it’s the most familiar experiences that have the biggest impact.

A favourite song can bring back memories from years ago. An afternoon spent gardening can reconnect someone with a lifelong hobby. Even a quiet conversation outdoors can become the highlight of the day.

That’s why life at Abbey Wood Lodge is shaped around the people who live here. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all programme, activities reflect residents’ interests, personalities and life experiences, helping everyone continue enjoying the things that matter most while staying connected to family, friends and the wider Ormskirk community.

Staying Connected to the Local Community

Getting out into the local community offers more than a change of scenery.

Visiting familiar places, discovering somewhere new or simply stopping for coffee together helps residents stay connected to the town they’ve always known.

That was exactly the case during a spring visit to a local garden centre, where residents explored colourful seasonal displays, browsed plants and gifts, and enjoyed coffee and cake together. The group admired houseplants and home décor, made a few purchases and relaxed over coffee and cake.

Later in the year, residents enjoyed another outing to Bents Garden Centre in Warrington as part of the home’s festive celebrations.

Christmas displays, a miniature festive village and even a visit to Santa helped make the day feel special before everyone gathered in the café for drinks and homemade treats.

These outings are far more than a day away from the home. They encourage conversation, independence and companionship while giving residents new experiences to share with their families and friends.

Celebrating the Seasons Together

The changing seasons bring a natural rhythm to life at Abbey Wood Lodge.

From autumn baking to Christmas celebrations and welcoming a new year together, these familiar occasions create moments that residents, families and the team can all share.

As autumn arrived, the home embraced the season with creative crafts, baking sessions and colourful decorations inspired by Halloween — /halloween-at-abbey-wood-lodge/.

Residents made handmade decorations, created pumpkin-inspired artwork and baked seasonal treats, with the focus firmly on spending time together rather than simply celebrating the occasion itself.

From there, attention turned to Christmas.

Throughout December, residents created wreaths using natural materials, decorated the home’s Christmas trees, enjoyed festive hot chocolate workshops, took part in quizzes and welcomed visiting performers — /festive-cheer-at-abbey-wood-lodge-a-december-to-remember/.

The build-up to Christmas became just as enjoyable as the day itself, with every activity adding to the festive atmosphere around the home.

As one year came to a close, residents welcomed the next with baking, music and time spent reflecting together — /residents-and-team-members-celebrate-the-new-year-at-abbey-wood-lodge/. A traditional Bundt cake, homemade cocktails, favourite memories from the previous year and a wishing wall all helped create a relaxed celebration before everyone welcomed the New Year with music and fireworks.

It’s often during these celebrations that conversations naturally turn to family traditions, favourite recipes and memories of years gone by.

Those stories become just as much a part of the celebration as the activities themselves.

Gardening, Fresh Air and Time Outdoors

For many residents, spending time outdoors has always been part of everyday life.

Whether it’s tending to flowers, watching wildlife or simply enjoying the fresh air, the garden offers a familiar place to slow down, spend time together and enjoy the changing seasons.

That’s exactly what happens during the home’s fortnightly gardening club.

Gardening often brings back memories, too.

The Abbey Wood Lodge gardening board celebrates residents’ love of gardening, showcasing personal memories, wildlife, and the many ways spending time in the garden supports health and wellbeing.

Residents have shared photographs of gardens they once cared for, sparking conversations about favourite flowers, allotments, family homes and the outdoor spaces that have meant so much throughout their lives.

Some residents enjoy getting involved with planting and caring for the garden. Others are happiest sitting in the sunshine, watching the birds or chatting with friends.

However they choose to spend their time outdoors, everyone is encouraged to take part in a way that feels comfortable and enjoyable.

Animal Visits and Sensory Experiences

Animals often create a sense of curiosity and connection. Visits can be particularly meaningful for residents who have owned pets or enjoyed being around animals throughout their lives.

Ormskirk care home residents recently enjoyed interactive animal encounters that inspired curiosity, conversation and plenty of smiles. During the visit from Boo’s Mobile Zoo, everyone had the opportunity to meet hairless guinea pigs, meerkats, lizards, a giant snake, a tortoise and even a beautiful barn owl.

Some residents chose to hold or gently stroke the animals, while others preferred to observe from a comfortable distance and learn fascinating facts about each species. Everyone was encouraged to take part at their own pace.

The visit inspired laughter, conversation and lasting memories while demonstrating how sensory experiences can engage residents through touch, sound, observation and shared stories about much-loved family pets.

Music, Entertainment and Shared Memories

Few things bring people together quite like music. A familiar song can spark a memory, encourage a conversation or simply brighten someone’s day. Whether residents prefer singing along, dancing or quietly listening, music has a way of making every performance feel personal.

That’s exactly what happened when the Ukulele Buddies visited the home. Familiar classics and Valentine’s favourites soon had residents singing along, dancing and sharing the memories those songs brought back.

Music doesn’t always have to fill the room with energy. During a live harp performance, residents enjoyed a quieter afternoon of reflection, listening to everything from classical pieces to Beatles favourites while requesting songs and hearing the stories behind the music.

Other performances brought a very different atmosphere. When Andrew Alty visited Abbey Wood Lodge, residents spent the afternoon singing, clapping and dancing together as familiar favourites filled the home.

No two residents experience music in quite the same way. Some can’t resist getting up to dance. Others prefer to sit back, listen and let the memories unfold.

However they choose to enjoy it, music continues to bring people together in a way few other activities can.

Creativity, Baking and Themed Activities

Creativity means something different to everyone.

For some residents, it’s painting or crafts. For others, it’s decorating cakes, making seasonal displays or simply enjoying the chance to create something together. The finished result is never the most important part — it’s the conversations, laughter and shared moments along the way.

Throughout the year, the activities naturally change with the seasons.

Christmas brings wreath making, festive cake decorating and handmade decorations, while autumn is filled with pumpkin crafts, painting and seasonal baking. These familiar traditions give residents something new to look forward to while celebrating the changing seasons together.

Sometimes, the most memorable afternoons come from doing something completely unexpected. That was certainly true during the Alice in Wonderland afternoon.

Residents, relatives and the team embraced the theme with colourful hats, fancy dress, themed food, quizzes and a screening of the much-loved story, transforming an ordinary afternoon into something everyone could enjoy together.

Whether it’s decorating cakes, making crafts or dressing up for a themed afternoon, these are often the moments residents and families talk about long afterwards.

They’re a reminder that enjoying time together can be just as important as the activity itself.

Food, Friendship and Everyday Wellbeing

Some of life’s best conversations happen around a table. Whether it’s afternoon tea, homemade cake or baking together for a special occasion, sharing food has a way of bringing people together. It creates time to catch up, reminisce and enjoy one another’s company in a relaxed setting.

One memorable example was a Father’s Day and birthday afternoon tea. Residents and their families came together to enjoy homemade savouries, freshly baked cakes and afternoon refreshments while celebrating several special milestones. It was a simple afternoon, but one filled with laughter, conversation and time spent together.

Food also helps mark the changing seasons. From festive baking and hot chocolate workshops to Christmas cakes, pumpkin cupcakes and New Year traditions, familiar recipes often spark conversations about family celebrations, favourite dishes and treasured memories from years gone by.

Long after the plates have been cleared away, it’s often the conversations people remember most.

Whether celebrating a birthday or simply enjoying afternoon tea together, these everyday moments help friendships grow and make the home feel even more welcoming.

Reminiscence Therapy and Life History

Every resident brings a lifetime of memories, experiences and stories that deserve to be celebrated. Reminiscence activities create opportunities for those experiences to be shared, valued and preserved.

Residents recently enjoyed sharing personal wartime memories during an engaging local history and reminiscence session. Local journalist Roger Blaxall brought original photographs, newspaper cuttings and wartime artefacts, encouraging residents to reflect on their own experiences of evacuation, bombing raids and childhood during the Second World War.

The home’s commitment to remembering significant moments in history also continued through a heartfelt VE Day celebration filled with music, remembrance and afternoon tea. Residents watched the national commemorations before enjoying wartime songs, traditional refreshments and displays featuring their own personal recollections of VE Day in 1945.

These experiences do far more than revisit history. They celebrate the remarkable lives our residents have lived while helping younger generations better understand the stories and experiences that have shaped them.

Celebrating Individual Stories and Achievements

Every resident has a unique life story that deserves to be recognised. Whether celebrating personal milestones, remarkable achievements or important occasions, these moments help residents feel valued and appreciated.

One particularly special occasion involved marking an incredible 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends and the local community. Edith’s centenary brought everyone together to celebrate an extraordinary life filled with service, travel, nursing and dedication to others.

Residents have also enjoyed celebrating inspiring women and their remarkable life journeys. International Women’s Day provided the perfect opportunity to recognise Rafi’s achievements, international career, love of education and determination throughout her life.

The home itself reached an important milestone by celebrating ten years of creating happy memories with residents and families. Friends, relatives and residents came together for cake, entertainment, dancing and shared reflections on the wonderful community that has grown over the past decade.

We often find it is these individual stories—not just organised activities—that help residents feel recognised, respected and truly at home.

Activities That Include Family and Friends

Family remains central to life at Abbey Wood Lodge. Friends and relatives are always encouraged to take part in celebrations, performances and everyday activities, creating meaningful moments together.

Families regularly join residents for birthdays, themed events, afternoon teas, live entertainment and seasonal celebrations. Whether dressing up for themed parties, sharing afternoon refreshments or singing along during musical performances, these shared experiences help strengthen relationships and create lasting memories.

Technology also helps residents stay connected when loved ones cannot visit in person. Video calls during birthday celebrations and other special occasions ensure families can remain involved, wherever they may be.

These connections help activities feel even more personal while allowing families to remain an important part of everyday life within the home.

Activities Built Around Every Individual

No two residents are exactly alike, so no two activity programmes should be either.

Some people enjoy live entertainment, themed celebrations and busy social events. Others prefer gardening, baking, music, reminiscence or quieter one-to-one experiences. We often find that when activities reflect someone’s personality, interests and life story, participation comes naturally.

That is the approach at Abbey Wood Lodge. Every activity, outing, celebration and shared experience is carefully planned around the people who live here, helping residents continue enjoying fulfilling lives, maintaining meaningful relationships and creating new memories with the people who matter most.
