Avocet House Care Home Helps Bring Loved Ones Together on Special Shopping Trip

A special outing to Springfields Shopping Centre proved to be much more than a day of shopping for residents at Avocet House Care Home, as the trip provided a valuable opportunity for families to spend quality time together, supported by the caring team.

The home’s latest Myley trip saw a full bus of residents enjoy a change of scenery, with opportunities to explore the shops, meet loved ones and make the most of a day out in the local community.

For resident Colin and his wife, Anne, the outing was particularly meaningful. Colin lives with advanced dementia and, since moving into the care home, Anne has found it difficult to feel confident taking him out independently. Understandably, the changes in their circumstances have made outings more challenging, but the team at Avocet House wanted to help them continue enjoying precious moments together.

The Springfields trip offered the perfect opportunity for Anne and Colin to spend time together outside the home, with the reassurance that the care team was nearby to provide support whenever needed.

Knowing that help was available allowed Anne to feel more comfortable and enjoy the experience with her husband. The day proved incredibly emotional, with Anne becoming tearful as she expressed her gratitude for the team’s kindness, understanding and support. On returning to the home, she once again shared how thankful she was for the opportunity and for the difference the outing had made to her.

Another resident also benefited from the trip, meeting family members at Springfields and enjoying time with them independently, with Avocet House providing the transport to make the visit possible.

These experiences highlight the importance of looking beyond everyday care and recognising the value of family connections. Sometimes, a little extra support and reassurance can make all the difference, helping residents and their loved ones continue to share experiences and create meaningful memories together.

At Avocet House Care Home, the team understands that moving into residential care can bring changes for the whole family. By providing thoughtful, person-centred support, the home aims to help residents maintain important relationships and ensure their loved ones feel supported, too.

The Myley trip was a wonderful example of how outings can offer far more than a change of scenery. They can restore confidence, strengthen relationships and create opportunities for families to enjoy the simple pleasure of spending time together.

Because sometimes, the most special part of a day out isn’t the destination, but the precious moments shared along the way. For Colin and Anne, the trip was a heartwarming reminder that, with the right support, meaningful experiences together can continue to be part of their lives.
