Residents at Holbeach Meadows chose China for their armchair travel destination for August.
As we always do, we decorated the lounges with flags, changed the tablecloths to match and used traditional Chinese lantern decorations to set the scene, along with our homemade decorations, that we had been working on in craft club earlier in the week.
We spent the morning learning how to make vegetable spring rolls with Activities Co-ordinators Sarah and Anya, and had a helping hand from Front of House Manager Martin. These were sent off to the kitchen, ready for cooking and we later enjoyed them as part of our tea in the evening.
Head Chef Mike cooked a delicious lunch of chicken with broccoli and ginger, beef and green pepper in black bean sauce, sweet and sour chicken, rice, chow mein, stir fry vegetables and prawn crackers. To make it extra special and out of the ordinary, it was presented take away style in individual paper cartons with chopsticks, and followed by a lovely mango dessert and fortune cookies!
In the afternoon, some residents continued crafting, while others watched a documentary about different places in China. Thanks to responses to our Facebook posts, we were able to look at some fascinating items, that were lent to us from relatives and members of the local community, especially for our armchair travel day.
Later in the afternoon we tried our hand at some Chinese card and traditional paper games. After a tea of chicken and sweetcorn soup, our homemade spring rolls, sesame prawn toast and wontons, we took to our fabulous cinema room and watched a Chinese acrobatic performance. A great way to round off a great day.
