A Picture, a Memory and a Little Piece of Local History at Avocet House

At Avocet House, reminiscence opportunities can arise from the simplest moments of everyday life. A photograph, a familiar song, a newspaper article, a favourite meal, having our nails painted, enjoying a milkshake, or simply sitting down for a chat can be enough to unlock precious memories and stories from the past.

We know that memories can be triggered by the smallest of things, and we love taking the time to listen when those memories come to the surface. Each story shared gives us a glimpse into the lives, experiences and adventures of the people who call Avocet House home.

Recently, we experienced a particularly wonderful moment with Jean, when a simple conversation about a picture hanging in her room unlocked a fascinating story of family, memories and local history.

Hanging proudly on Jean’s wall is a picture of Fishtoft Church. This is no ordinary picture. It was originally owned by Jean’s grandmother and was later passed on to Jean’s mother before eventually coming into Jean’s possession. It is therefore a much-loved and treasured family heirloom, representing not only the village where her family lived, but also the church that they attended together.

However, the picture holds an even more fascinating secret.

Hidden behind the frame is an old envelope, carefully preserved and stuck to the back of the picture. Inside are several newspaper cuttings relating to the remarkable tree that once grew at the top of Fishtoft Church tower.

For those familiar with Fishtoft Church, this may bring back memories of their own. For Jean, however, the story was much more personal.

Looking at the picture brought back happy memories of visiting her grandmother. Jean vividly remembered seeing the painting hanging in the hallway of her grandmother’s home and listening to her grandmother talk about the unusual sight of a tree growing from the top of the church tower.

As a child, Jean found this rather difficult to believe. A tree growing on top of a church tower seemed almost impossible! Naturally, she wanted to see it for herself.

Jean recalled walking to the church with her mother and grandmother. As they approached, she remembered looking upwards from the church gate, following the tower towards the top — and there it was, just as her grandmother had described: a sycamore tree growing from the top of the church tower.

What a wonderful memory to have preserved through the generations.

It was particularly special for us at Avocet House to sit and listen as Jean shared this story. What began as a simple conversation about a picture became a journey back through her childhood, her family and the history of the local community.

The picture itself, along with the carefully kept newspaper clippings, has travelled through several generations of Jean’s family. It is more than just a painting; it is a treasured family possession carrying memories, stories and a fascinating piece of local history.

Moments like this remind us why reminiscence is so important. Sometimes a photograph can open a door to a memory that has been quietly waiting to be shared. Listening to Jean tell her story felt as though we had been welcomed into a little family secret — one that had been lovingly kept safe and passed down through the years.

At Avocet House, we feel privileged to hear about the experiences, adventures, childhoods and memories of our residents. Every person has a story to tell, and sometimes the most wonderful stories are found in the simplest of things.

Thank you, Jean, for sharing such a special memory with us. We hope that this treasured picture, the newspaper clippings and the story of the sycamore tree continue to be cherished and passed through your family for many more generations.

And perhaps, next time we look at a picture hanging on a wall, we will remember that there may be a wonderful story hiding behind it!
