In a world where we often focus on what we can gain, one of our residents reminded us all that the greatest gift is what we can give.
Under the umbrella of the “Grant a Wish” initiative – a program designed to fulfil the personal dreams and aspirations of our residents – the lifestyle team recently sat down with Doreen to find out what her heart desires most. While many might choose a trip to the seaside or a special performance, Doreen’s request was remarkably simple and profoundly selfless: she wanted to spend her day making other people happy.
Doreen, known by those around her for her humble nature and caring spirit, decided that her wish was to bake for her community. On a Wednesday afternoon in February, the home’s kitchen was filled with the sweet aroma of vanilla and sugar as Doreen got to work. With a little assistance from the staff, she spent hours meticulously baking and decorating a series of “lovely cupcakes”.
However, the baking was only the beginning. Once the cakes were ready, Doreen set off on a mission. She spent the afternoon visiting residents and visitors throughout the home, personally offering the treats as a surprise gift.
In a wonderful twist of fate, Doreen’s afternoon of giving coincided perfectly with Random Act of Kindness Day.
Residents and visitors were absolutely bowled over by Doreen’s generosity. She didn’t want any recognition; she just genuinely loves doing things for others. To see the smiles on everyone’s faces as she handed out the cupcakes was something truly special.
Doreen’s humble approach to her “wish” has left a lasting impression on the home. While the initiative is meant to treat the residents, Doreen proved that for some, the ultimate treat is the opportunity to be kind.
It was so lovely to be able to help Doreen achieve her wish. It was such a selfless action on her behalf, and it reminded us all of the power of a small, thoughtful gesture.
In an era where “random acts of kindness” are encouraged globally, Doreen didn’t just follow the trend – she lived it, one cupcake at a time.
